Artist’s Statement:
“Estella Walton is an oil painter whose practice is guided by Northern Renaissance techniques studied during her degree in art history at the University of Bristol. Her work focuses on landscapes and portraits informed by British folktales and classic literature, grounded in her upbringing in Purbeck.
Purbeck has long been a significant influence on Estella’s work. Having returned home after living in a city, she has come to see the landscape with fresh perspective, paying closer attention to its history, atmosphere, and quiet presence. Familiar locations are used as starting points for paintings that explore narrative, memory, and place.
She utilises grisaille underpainting to establish structure and tone before building colour in translucent layers. This method reflects her interest in traditional techniques and slow, considered painting. She frequently works on wood panel, valuing the way the natural texture of the surface remains visible and contributes to the physical character of the finished work. Through a combination of historical process, narrative reference, and observation, her paintings aim to balance technical discipline with personal subject matter.”
