Artist’s Statement:
“I make abstract mosaics using materials that come from the landscape around me. Much of my work incorporates local shale and fossils, Purbeck stone, minerals and hand-made brick, mixed with Italian smalti glass, semi-precious stones and beads. I enjoy working with fragments — pieces that already carry a sense of place, history and character, and I often add tiny details that only reveal themselves on close inspection.
I rarely begin with a fixed design; instead, I respond to the materials as I work, letting colour, texture and shape suggest the next move. I’m particularly drawn to uneven surfaces and the quiet drama they create. I cut my own tesserae from larger pieces of stone, allowing me to play with thickness, edges and weight, and to explore the three-dimensional quality that naturally emerges.
The surfaces are intentionally irregular — raised, layered and textured — echoing erosion, fracture and geological time. I enjoy the balance between control and letting go, trusting the materials to guide the process. The finished pieces are intuitive and tactile, shaped as much by the materials themselves as by my hand, and rooted in a deep enjoyment of colour, texture and making.”
