Artist’s Statement:
“First encountering clay for a day aged 12, it has grown into a passion for clay – creating a piece that can be used for generations is extraordinary! After adult evening classes I took a course at Goldsmiths’ College 1981-3, taught throwing by Lisa Hammond. Since then I’ve potted more or less consistently while having four daughters, and working in tourism and construction with my husband.
My work is mainly wheel thrown, twice fired in an electric kiln, decorated in slips and glazes that I mix from the raw materials. Inspiration comes from making and commissions. One of my best sellers are my fish dishes which I introduced after realising that the squared off dish looked like a sardine tin as I was attaching the handles. From there all the other fish designs have flowed. My soap dishes, made for a soap maker, introduced me to underglaze colours and many different designs.
I have sold my work in Dorset since 1987 and in 2013-2024 we owned the Creative Gallery in Wareham. I still sell in local galleries in Wareham, Swanage, Dorchester, Weymouth and Romsey, and attend fairs and events throughout the year.”
