PAW Sketching Programme 2018
The (almost) final programme of sketching days for PAW members this year is ready and the list of dates and venues is listed below.
There is one major change to the procedure this year, namely that there is no up-front fee for attending and no need to register. This change is designed to encourage as many members to attend, without the need to make a commitment beforehand. Simply turn up on whichever day(s) you can attend and enjoy the company of like-minded artists, whilst capturing the beauty of some of the local areas finest landscapes.
This year’s dates and venues are as follows:
Monday 7th May – Bluebells at Wood Street (organised by Martha Dechazal)
Wood Street is situated just outside Wool, on the road to Lulworth. Look out for a sign for Wood Street, which takes you along a single-track road for about half a mile to a large lay-by which will accommodate several cars.
Martha will be here at 10am to meet you. She recommends that you bring along wellies, a packed lunch and something to sit on! Please note also that there are no toilet facilities near the wood.
Martha has also offered two further dates as reserve/completion dates. These are Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th May. Please contact her on 0772 7704603 for any further information.
Saturday 26th May – Sunday 3rd June inclusive – Sketching at RSPB Arne (Roger Lockey)
For the third successive year, we are collaborating with RSPB Arne to be able to use their reserve as a base for sketching. This year, the marquee will be set up near the start of the Shipstal Trail, overlooking an area of heathland called ‘The Grip’, with extensive views over Middlebere Channel towards Corfe Castle.
The daily sessions will commence at 10.30am and run until 3.30pm. Please enquire at the Welcome Hut in the main car park for directions to the marquee.
Please note – There is a £5.00 car park charge at Arne, unless you are an RSPB member. However, there is free car parking available to any PAW member who has volunteered to supervise the marquee in advance. Please contact Roger Lockey for any further information. His mobile number is 07949 197074.
Friday 1st June – The English Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble rehearsal at St. James’ Church, Kingston, BH20 5LL (Charlie Money supervising)
Come along to sketch whilst this renowned group rehearses ‘Echoes of Venice’ in the wonderful surroundings of Kingston Church. Please arrive by 1.45pm, to minimise any distractions during the rehearsal.
Saturday 2nd June – I Fagiolini rehearsal at Lady St. Mary Church, Wareham, BH20 4ND (Charlie Money supervising)
More chances to hone your rapid figure drawing skills, when I Fagiolini make a welcome return to Purbeck Art Weeks. This year they will be rehearsing for their performance of ‘Monteverdi, the Other Vespers’. Set-up time will be 2.30pm.
Wednesday 11th July – Kingston and Swyre Head (Hosted by Andy Knill/organised by Roger Lockey)
This session begins in Kingston, at the home of PAW member Andy Knill, who has kindly offered to act as host for the day. We will then be setting off for Swyre Head, via Heaven’s Gate and the Encombe Golden Bowl, a distance of approximately 2 miles each way. Obviously, individual artists may wish to stop at any point along the route, either to take photographs or sketch any of the myriad choices of view available.
Andy’s address is – Hillview Cottage, Encombe, Kingston, Corfe Castle BH20 5LW. Please meet there at 10am.
Directions to the house are as follows:
Head for the village of Kingston on road from east end of Corfe Castle that goes to Kingston and Langton Matravers. Drive up Kingston Hill. At the top turn right by the Scott Arms pub. Drive up into the village, pass the large church on your left. At end of houses, enter the wood. Alternative car parking is walkers’ car park for Houns Tout on left (400m walk along Houns Tout footpath, we are last house on left).
Otherwise, carry on through wood with drystone wall to left. At entrance to tarmac drive on left turn in. There is a sign saying Encombe immediately on the right. Follow this drive for about 350m, it bends to right. On left is a gravelled track through a gate – take this. Then turn right, you are on track to Houns Tout be careful for dogs / walkers. Follow track for 150m house and driveway on left -park as directed (depending on numbers attending). We will have tea /coffee and toilet available.

Monday 16th July – Durlston Country Park (supervised by Mon Hawley)
The combination of breath-taking sea views, vertiginous cliffs, wild countryside and a wonderful café, make Durlston an excellent venue for a sketching session!
Please note – there is a charge at the car park by the Castle. Currently, this is £5 for all day, or £4 for up to 4 hours. Meet Mon in the car park at 10.30am.
Monday 10th September – Kimmeridge Bay (supervised by Mon Hawley)
Another extremely popular location, with a wide range of very scenic views, as well as the chance to find an undiscovered fossil!
Once again, the starting time is 10.30am.
Remember there is also a £5.00 car park charge applicable here, so perhaps car-sharing might be advisable.
Sunday 23rd September – Tyneham Village and Worbarrow Bay (Roger Lockey supervising)
This proved to be the most popular venue during the 2017 sketching programme, which is hardly surprising when you consider the almost limitless range of subjects to record here.
Meet in the car park at 10.30am.
There is a recommended £2.00 donation for using the car park, which is brilliant value!
Date tbc – Encombe House
Martha Dechazal is hoping to be able to organise a sketching day at Encombe House this summer. Please check on the PAW website and the Visual Artists’ Facebook page for further announcements.
Please remember, there is no need to pre-book any of the sketching days this year. Just turn up and enjoy however many sessions you can manage to attend. Hope to see you there!
