Highlights from 2012
In 2012 we were delighted to be able to present the following concerts and events over the Purbeck Art Weeks Festival:
Crown the Castle

Saturday 26th May, procession 5.30pm finish around 7.30pm
Celebrate the opening of the Festival in the grounds of Corfe Castle (courtesy of the NT). A procession with brass, drums, flags and masks will be followed by circus acts, brass and jazz, a Fair Organ, stallholders selling food and produce. Help us make a Great Jubilee Crown from stones and “capture the castle” in paint and drawings. Why not bring a picnic and chairs or buy your food and drink from our stallholders? There will be a bar. Admission free to everyone but donations always welcome in our buckets!

Sunday 27th May, 5.00pm tea, 5.45pm concert, All Saints, Swanage
This professional brass ensemble performs Sans Saens’ Carnival of the Animals and the Tuba Bears Picnic, a new narrative recital with the voices of Simon Callow and Ian McMillan. “Carnival of the Animals is a tour-de-force for Tuba Quartet and piano.” “YouTuba take you on a magical journey… an utterly satisfying experience” Gary Crosby OBE. A great family show that reflects the theme of this year’s Purbeck Young Artists workshops.
£14 adults, £2 children to include tea, cakes etc.

The Dick Odgers Memorial Lecture
Monday 28th May, 7.30pm Purbeck School
TS – The writer entertains us with tales from his satirical pen.

Burngate Stone Carving Taster
Tuesday 29th May, 12.00 noon till 1.15pm
Come and try your hand at stone carving in a special joint venture between the PAW Festival and the Burngate Stone Carving Centre above Langton Matravers.
£5 to include all materials. Open to all aged 14+. Apply to info@burngatestonecentre.co.uk

An Evening at Smedmore House
Grand Tourists in the East: From Casanova to Disraeli

Tuesday 29th May, 7.00pm Smedmore House, Kimmeridge
Historian Philip Mansell opens his family home and gives a talk followed by a buffet supper with a glass of wine. There will be suitable articles for sale from Smiths of Swanage. A middle eastern buffet will be served by Butterfingers of Swanage.
£25 per ticket for the complete evening. There are limited numbers, so please book early.
Brahms Horn Trio

Wednesday 30th May, 7.30pm Lady St Mary, Wareham
Miranda Fulleylove (violin), Fergus McWilliam (French Horn) & Huw Watkins (piano) will perform the lyrical Horn Trio by Brahms, the Horn Trio of 2009 by Huw Watkins and pieces for violin and piano and horn and piano in this lovely setting.
£16 for adults, £2 for children

The Salt Pig (Wareham based) is offering a quiche, salad, pudding and glass of wine/fruit juice buffet supper in the neighbouring church hall from 6.00pm. £28 for a combined buffet and concert ticket.
Frances Hodgkins’ War in Corfe Castle

Thursday 31st May, 7.30pm Harman’s Cross Village Hall
Illustrated talk by Pennie Denton with Cathryn Bradshaw reading from the letters of artist Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947) who was an artistic descendant of Henri Matisse and a lyrical colourist of the landscape.

Rollington Lunchtime Artist Series
Friday 1st June, 1.00pm
Local artist Lizzie Induni leads a clay workshop. Open to everyone of all ages (children should be accompanied by an adult). Come and get your hands into it!

Gabrieli Consort & Players


Saturday 2nd June, 7.30pm St Mary’s Swanage
This renowned international ensemble under their Director Paul McCreesh will perform Handel’s English pastoral Acis & Galatea with Mhairi Lawson (soprano) as Galatea, James Oxley (tenor) as Galatea plus other soloists and orchestra. A Handel oboe concerto will be preceded by pieces for recorders involving players from across Purbeck who will have had a workshop with the Gabrieli that morning (see the PAW Festival website for further details).
This concert and the workshop have been generously supported by The Golsoncott Foundation, The Swanage & Wareham Rotary, an anonymous donation and The Friends of the PAW Festival.

Rollington Lunchtime Artist Series
Sunday 3rd June, 1.00pm
Can Artists Save the Planet? – Geoff Jones environmental artist and educator reviews how artists globally are responding to climate change, offering examples from the environmental art movement, and culminating in a collaborative artwork outside the barn. Intriguing – so come and join in.

Regal Rhythms

Sunday 3rd June, 11.00am, St James’ Kingston
In this coffee concert, in recognition of the diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Mhairi Lawson (soprano) and Paula Chateauneuf (lutes) perform music from the courts of Elizabeth I, James VI and I, Charles I, Charles II, and William and Mary, featuring compositions by Dowland, Lawes and Purcell. Kingston church offers an intimate and inspiring setting for this ravishing music. Coffee and cakes available.

Music of the Spheres

Monday 4th June, 7.30pm, St Edward’s church, Corfe
RSC and recording artist Martin Best with BBC Early Music Show presenter Lucie Skeaping and their friends take us on a musical journey to The Music of the Spheres. Shakespeare’s “sweet power of music” will be celebrated in readings, on original instruments with strings/wind/drums and by singers. Milton, Dowland and later writers and composers all feature in this evening sequence which has been specially created for us.

The 3rd annual PAW Festival Poetry Slam with the irrepressible Elvis. Special bar available.

Fra Newbery

Wednesday 6th June, 7.00pm, Harman’s Cross Village Hall
Fra Newbery’s biographer Dr George Rawson will give an illustrated talk on this Dorset artist who was also the Director of the Glasgow School of Art, a supporter of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as well as the creator of the Corfe village sign, the reredos in the Swanage Catholic church and other local works. He lived in Corfe for many years.

After this event there will be a free showing of the 1987 film Charles Rennie Mackintosh Dreams and Recollections staring Tom Conti.
Rollington Lunchtime Artist Series
Thursday 7th June, 1.00pm – 2.00pm
Tracey Chapman has a flock of Shetland sheep from which she uses the fine, naturally coloured wool to spin, felt and weave. See and hear her talk on a different form of art; turning a pile of raw fleeces into an array of unusual products.

Thursday 7th June, 7.00pm, The Rex Cinema, Wareham
The Oscar winning composer (Shakespeare in Love etc) develops themes from a workshop earlier in the day (see website for details) and introduces and plays with his group a selection of film music to black & white films.

Rollington Lunchtime Artist Series
Friday 8th June, 1.00pm
Award winning sculptor Moira Purver talks about her work and offers insights into the process of creating her evocative sculptures.

Jubilation: Celebrating Local Young Musicians

Saturday 9th June, 7.30pm, St Mary’s Swanage
Hear some of our local rising musical stars as they perform works from Bach to Faure on a range of instruments. Some are at music colleges and some have just left to embark on their careers. Artists include Patrick Curlett (violin), Lauren Fowler and Fiona Hymns (sopranos), Helen Nicholas (Piano), Sarah Shaw (oboe), Joe Arnold (trombone) and Chris Rand (saxophone)
£14 adults, £2 children
This concert is being supported by the Swanage Chamber of Commerce and by Goadsby.
It will raise funds for the Wimborne based Michael James Music Trust.
Sacconi Quartet

Sunday 10th June, 7.30pm, St Edwards, Corfe
This increasingly renowned young quartet which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, will perform:

Bartók – String Quartet no. 3
Beethoven – String Quartet in C, opus 59 no. 3, Rasumovsky
