PYA 2019

In 2019, thanks to the generosity of our local sponsors, we were again able to offer 17 workshops to schools across Purbeck. Led by four experienced artists the workshops took up the Festival theme of Flights of Fancy exploring various techniques that students might not otherwise experience: 3D assemblage, mono printing, metal work, rust printing, cyanotypes, stone carving and animation.

Community Art

Swanage Sea Life Bench Project

In 2019, Carlotta Barrow unveiled the Swanage Sea Life Bench project, inspired by the constant movement of the sea and the life beneath the waves. Stone panels were prepared with a crest of a wave carved on the top to evoke the rolling waters, with pupils from The Swanage School, led by art teacher Sarah Mulhern developing their designs and carving the panels at the Burngate Stone Carving Centre. We are grateful to Lovell’s Quarry for providing the pre-cut stone panels, to Scott Taylor for carving the waves, and to the Albion Quarry for providing ‘practice’ stone as well as various sponsors – notably the AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The completed panels have been placed alongside the garden path overlooking Swanage pier.

PAWF John Flower Bursary

Bursary Award Recipients:

2019:

Amy Jerman: A contribution to saxophone lessons for the year, helping to develop your ambition of learning to play to a professional standard and going on to study music at University.

Joanna Smith: An award towards the cost of a newer computer so that you can continue to develop your digital art confidently, and on suitable equipment.

Competitions

Purbeck Young Artist Competition: work based on this year’s theme was exhibited at Rollington Barn (in the Byre) and there was a prize giving on the Friday evening before the Festival began.

PAW Raffle: tickets could be bought at Rollington for the chance to win a £250 voucher for a piece of PAW art of your choice.

Theme Competition: Exhibiting artists could submit artwork based on the current year’s theme (Flights of Fancy) to be selected to be used on the poster or for the cover of the Brochure or the Programme.

Sketch PAW 2019 Winning Entry

In 2019 we sold sketchbooks at Rollington Barn and asked you to carry them with you around the festival, and draw and sketch whatever inspired YOU in PAW and Purbeck. We also asked you to show us what you did on Instagram and Facebook by tagging #sketchpaw and #dalerrowney. There was a prize for the submission that best captured the spirt of PAW and this was the winner:
