In 2012 the PAWF John Flower Bursary was established to help Purbeck artists to develop their artistic talents, supported by generous donation by John Flower.

This final concert listed in the programme was actually a series of three, staged in the autumn. It was the beginning of the Autumn Chamber Music Festival which evolved into the Purbeck International Chamber Music Festival (PICMF). Details of the three concerts are below:

Following the unqualified success of her four concerts during the PAW Festival 2011, Natalie Clein returns this year on August 31st, September 1st and 2nd with Nicholas Daniel, oboe, Sarah Beaty, clarinet and other international musician friends to play more spell-binding chamber music for her
enthusiastic Purbeck audience.

PYA 2012

Purbeck Young Artists (PYA) is the children’s section of the Festival. Our aim is to promote and celebrate the creativity of children of all ages. Each year the PYA team encorage schools to explore a shared theme and explore new creative activities. Outside of school, the performers who are playing at the Festival lead more workshops to introduce young people to their techniques and share their experience. This year Stephen Warbeck, the Gabrieli Consort and several local artists are sharing their skills.

PAWF John Flower Bursary

Establishing Criteria:

The Trustees wish to encourage artists, of any discipline, in the development of their careers and therefore propose to make awards to deserving individuals. The awards are particularly intended for those artists who would use the award to take the next step in their career.

Applicants must live and/or work/study in Purbeck and be able to demonstrate some basic artistic ability.

Awards will generally be in the range of £50 to £500 per application. Applicants will be asked, in the first instance, to contact the Secretary to discuss their need for an award and advice on how to apply.

Applications can be quite informal but must show how the award will assist the development of their artistic career.

A panel of three, including at least one Trustee, will make the judgement on the merit of the application and amount to be paid, which will only be awarded after ratification by the board of Trustees. The judges shall take such steps as they feel to be appropriate to gain the information they require in order to reach agreement on the recommendation. Such further steps may, for example, include seeking further information from the applicant, interviewing the applicant or visiting the applicant to experience and learn more about the work of the applicant.

The recommendation, which should preferably be unanimous, can be to make the full award applied for, make a partial award, apply conditions to the granting of an award or to reject the application.  The judges should provide some rationale to support their decision, particularly in the case of rejection or partial or conditional award, aimed at providing some helpful feedback to the applicant. The judges should, amongst other points, consider the following in relation to the application: Does the applicant have –

  • Permanent place of residence in Purbeck
  • Place of work or study in Purbeck
  • Other links with Purbeck
  • Basic ability
  • Potential to develop
  • Past work
  • Appropriateness of proposed use of award
  • Willingness to commit to PAWF for a period of time

A decision on the application should take no longer than 8 weeks from submission of the application.

Felicity Crawford: An award for the costs of a watercolour course.

Helen Young: An award to reimburse you for the costs of materials and courses that will help and encourage you in the development of your career as a watercolour artist.

Free Tickets for Young Journalists: Children aged 10 to 19 could win frre events tickets for submitting a review of an event.

Purbeck Young Artist Competition: work based on this year’s theme was exhibited at Rollington Barn (primarily in the Cafe). There was a prize giving at the Swanage Middle School.

Rollington Lunchtime Artist Series

The Greenwood Workshop was based at Rollington on Fridays and the weekends during the Festival. You could try the ancient craft of pole lathe turning and make your own product to take home. Woodland products such as BBQ charcoal, bean poles, stools, chairs and spoons were also for sale.

Other Talks & Demonstrations:

Burngate Stone Carving Taster – Come and try your hand at stone carving in a special joint venture between the PAW Festival and the Burngate Stone Carving Centre. Led by Val Quinn.

Local artist Lizzie Induni leads a clay workshop.

Jacky Botterill will lead a workshop on Egg Tempera painting – the technique used to create ancient frescos and icons. Come and mix your own paint from egg and natural pigments and create your own design on a prepared wooden panel.

Can Artists Save the Planet? – Geoff Jones environmental artist and educator reviews how artists globally are responding to climate change, offering examples from the environmental art movement, and culminating in a collaborative artwork outside the barn.

Clarissa Galliano will describe with original work her artistic journey from large charcoal paintings of figures, througha period of domestic still lifes, to recent abstract work. The talk will discuss how important a strong tradition in drawing has been in the development of a painting career.

Award winning sculptor Moira Purver talks about her work and offers insights into the process of creating her evocative sculptures.

Tracey Chapman has a flock of Shetland sheep from which she uses the fine, naturally coloured wool to spin, felt and weave. See and hear her talk ona different form of art; turning a pile of raw fleeces into an array of unusual products
