PYA 2017

In 2017 we ran 15 workshops in schools to inspire young artists to be even more creative, enterprising and innovative – as well as have fun. The theme for Purbeck Young Artists 2017 was a Moment in Time and was chosen to give students the maximum scope to explore their imaginative range; encouraging them to draw inspiration from a wide range of sources and interpret the theme from varied perspectives. The range of workshops spanned textiles, metal work, photography, dance, ink painting, sewing, mosaics and clay modelling.

Community Art

Wareham Library Garden

In 2017, three local schools made a wide range of clay creatures, birds, plants and flowers as part of a Wildlife Frieze that was hung on the wall in the newly refurbished Wareham Library Garden.

Swanage Sea Life Bench Project

In 2017, Carlotta Barrow began the Swanage Sea Life Bench project, inspired by the constant movement of the sea and the life beneath the waves. Stone panels were prepared with a crest of a wave carved on the top to evoke the rolling waters, with pupils from The Swanage School, led by art teacher Sarah Mulhern developing their designs and carving the panels at the Burngate Stone Carving Centre. We are grateful to Lovell’s Quarry for providing the pre-cut stone panels, to Scott Taylor for carving the waves, and to the Albion Quarry for providing ‘practice’ stone as well as various sponsors – notably the AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The completed panels have been placed alongside the garden path overlooking Swanage pier.

Competitions

Purbeck Young Artist Competition: work based on this year’s theme was exhibited at Rollington Barn (in the Byre) and there was a prize giving on the Thursday evening before the Festival began.

Postcard Competition: collect signatures from five different artists venues and win a £250 voucher for a piece of PAW art of your choice.

Brochure & Programme Cover Competition: Exhibiting artists could submit artwork to be selected for the cover of the Brochure and the Programme.

Shop Window Competition: Local shops decorated their windows and the public voted to choose the best. The winner won free advertising space in the following year’s brochure and programme.

Flag Workshops

We held our second Flag Workshop in 2017. The Flags we make were used to publicise Open Studios and the Rollington Barn Exhibition.

2 Day Raku Workshop

This was held at the Boilerhouse Gallery and was run by Richard Jeffery and Jane Cunliffe. The workshop covered using a variety of hand-building techniques to take you from raw clay to finished, fired, glazed work ready for you to take home.

Sketchbook Workshop with Roger Lockey

Roger ran this very informative sketchbook workshop where we all brought our sketchbooks to share our practice, ideas and approaches so that we could broaden each other’s horizons with an open discussion.
